Fake Krugerrands – Buyers Beware

Fake Krugerrands
by: Ben Tseytlin - on Coins & Currency

We have recently become aware of some counterfeit coins that are being sold and felt the need to get the word out to try and stop the spread of them. They are ¼ ounce proof Krugerrands in NGC holders. They are not gold. The holders themselves are of very good quality but there are several things to look out for that will let you know these particular coins are not authentic. The first thing to look for is that the holographic decal on the back of the holder is on the outside of the plastic. With genuine NGC graded coins this would be sealed in the plastic. Also on the front of the label at the bottom where it says NGC with a brown background there should be little holographic “NGC” in the background but these are also not present in the counterfeit coins.

Please make sure to take the extra time to scrutinize the coins you are buying. It is natural to let your guard down a little when buying graded and authenticated coins and that is why this scam is working so far. Take the extra minute or two and be thorough, it will save you money and will hopefully help to keep these coins out of circulation.
