Longines Dolce Vita Mini 16mm Blue Steel Watch Review
by: Ben Tseytlin - on Vintage & Luxury Watches

The Dolce Vita series is widely regarded as one of the world’s best collections of luxury watches. Produced by Longines, they are available in both mid and mini sizes, and are worn by men and women. These watches are also sold in automatic or quartz movement, and are manufactured with robust, high end materials such as gold and solid blue steel which will provide unmatched sophistication to those fortunate enough to wear them.

Background

Longines is a luxury watch manufacturer that was founded in 1832 by Auguste Agassiz in Saint-Imier. In 1983 it became a subsidiary for Swiss Swatch Group. The organization is best known for its 20H chronograph movement. This mono pusher styled chronograph controls the stop, reset and start functions through the crown. The development of the 20H chronograph allowed Longines engineers to assemble stop watches that were so precise that they could be used in a variety of professional sporting events such as jumping or horse racing.

However, in the hyper competitive Swiss watch industry, it is not enough to design an attractive and functional watch. Longines needed a way to stand out from its competitors, and this was accomplished by Ernest Francillon, an economist by trade. One of his early innovations was solely manufacturing pocket watches that were crown wound, instead of key wound. This combined with the development of new production methods (for the time) led to faster production without sacrificing quality, and by 1867 the company was able to build its first factory at Les Longines, after which it was named.

Review

This diamond and stainless steel Dolce Vita watch is designed for ladies. It makes an excellent anniversary, Christmas or birthday gift, and provides the perfect of blend of elegance and practical functionality. It is designed in such a manner where it will be comfortable to wear around the wrist and is outfitted with a dial set made from ivory/silver and Roman numeral style hour markers, with hand indicators made with silver tone.

The stainless steel used in this watch is anything but ordinary. It is 16mm surgical grade (316L), and shaped into a rectangular case with an accompanying bracelet. The bracelet incorporates a dual lock deployment clasp which is concealed, which makes it simple to operate. A stunning diamond bezel that is set with twenty eight diamonds is also visible, and the Dolce Vita is water resistant at depths up to thirty meters (100 feet). In some models the crown is made with sapphire cabochon, with a smooth Swiss quartz movement. Those familiar with Longines know that their crystals are exceptional in quality, since they are master polished by hand, and only the clearest and smoothest specimens are chosen.

The Dolce Vita watch uses a double fold closure and has a Lug which is 12mm in size. Some models feature a Mother or Pearl blue dial and the hour markers will be made from diamond.
