Luxury Watch Spotlight: Cartier
Established in Paris in 1847, Cartier is known for its distinct watches which have garnered a loyal following over the last 150 years. They are regularly worn by celebrities and royalty, leading to Cartier being given the nickname “The Jeweler of Kings.”
The oldest Cartier watches were made by hand in France. This brand is known for their intricate chronographs and repeaters. The earliest models were a bit rugged but extraordinarily elegant, which captured the attention of the European elite. It was Cartier that influenced the aristocracy of Paris to adopt the wristwatch over the pocket watch for men, which at the time was the considered the only watch suitable for gentlemen.
The Cartier Style
These watches are known for their gold lunette, square shape and bracelet, the basic style of which was first seen in 1904. Variations have been developed over the decades, but Cartier is a brand that is instantly recognizable to high end watch enthusiasts. These watches are also known for their excellent movement, which with some models can be seen from the back, as many are made from glass.
Cartier has faced a number of challenges, one of which is the limited quantity of some of its models (particularly the Collection Privee), and acquiring all the necessary parts through their suppliers. This led to some models being released later than expected. Cartier responded to these challenges by beginning the production of their own parts in-house, including, dials, springs, rotors, hands and calibers.
What Makes This Brand Unique?
Aside from building many of their watch parts in-house, Cartier has manufactured new calibers and materials. This has put them on the cutting edge of watchmaking technology, developing concepts which are truly innovative. One such example is the ID-ONE, a concept watch that can store energy with much greater efficiency than standard watches, and which requires little, if any servicing.
Cartier has hundreds of models and they’ve always managed to stay ahead of their competitors. One of their most spectacular brands is the Pasha Cartier, which is considered by many to be the finest expression of traditional watch design merged with contemporary technology. This model utilizes a round case with shapes that are smooth and harmonious, with rounded crowns that have a cabochon stone at the top. The dial for these models may vary in design and color, and the hands are shaped like a sword with roman or Arabic numerals which bring the style full center.
Overall, Cartier watches bring with them elegance and delivers a cutting edge look. They are extremely reliable and the models that use steel always use the highest quality which is polished. Their dials tend to be elaborate in decoration and the metal bracelet on some models can be removed with ease and replaced with straps made of leather. These watches also feel exceptionally comfortable when worn on the wrist, with dials that are easy to read. Models are available for men and women and those who wear them convey a sense of strength, style and power.
