How To Shop for a Stylish Belt Buckle
by: Ben Tseytlin - on Miscellaneous

Whether you’re male or female, wearing a stylish belt buckle is the perfect way to complete your outfit. However, this is an area that is too often overlooked, so below are some tips for purchasing the right one.

Overview

Belts were originally designed for soldiers, and were usually held up by frame buckles. They’ve evolved greatly over the centuries, and are now worn by females and made with exotic materials such as turquoise. The basic belt buckle is flat with a pin that is hinged and a rectangular frame. This is used to join the strap or belt ends.

Today, there are many buckles available on the market, so many that choosing one can be challenging. Generally speaking, when making a purchase you want something that stands out, but which also complements your overall attire.

Snap or Stitch Buckles

Snap buckles have a single end that is connected to the belt’s buckle, and the other end will be held via a catch that is secure and often adjustable. These buckles are best reserved for casual wear and are less common than the other types. Stitch buckles are woven so that the texture can be easily modified. There are no prong holes since these buckles use a clasp that connects the belt rather than going directly through it. Depending on color, style and shape, stitch buckles can be worn with formal or casual wear.

Reversible And Plate Buckles

Reversible buckles are twisted so that they can accommodate the side you choose to wear. In the past they mostly came in black or brown but now come in many other colors which are compatible with  every setting. They are best worn with formal attire but can also be used with casual clothes. Plate belt buckles were popularized by cowboys and 19th century soldiers. They are perfect for those that plan to wear a Western or rodeo style outfit. These buckles use a clasp with three hooks, and while two fit inside one end, a single hook will connect to the other side.

Box Frame And Webbing Buckles

Box frame buckles were popular with 20th century soldiers and are usually found in web belts. The prong is adjustable and totally surrounds the belt’s webbing. Some belts come with a metallic tip that makes them easier to use. These belts are best reserved for casual outfits. Webbing buckles are related but a bit different. They are designed with a loop in which you place your belt tip and then pull. They are among the simplest buckles to operate and go well with clothing that is causal. They are popular among hikers, climbers and those that engage in sports due to their high durability.

O or D Ring Buckles

These buckles are usually made with metal or plastic and will be shaped like the litter O or D, hence the name. They are quite trendy and don’t use a prong, but are loosened or tightened by adjusting the belt strap. D or O ring buckles are designed for casual instead of formal wear, but can also be worn with semi casual clothing.
