This piece displays an original vibrant white luster with a tinge of light canary yellow hues in the peripheries, semi-glossy surfaces and excellent, sharp details. The Seated Liberty twenty cent piece was a short lived denomination of U.S. currency minted from 1875-1878. Featuring Christian Gobrechts Seated Liberty design on the obverse, William Barber later re-engraved and refined the design. He also created the reverse featuring a left standing bald eagle about to take flight. Original designs called for the coin to feature both ‘⅕ DOLLAR and ‘TWENTY CENTS’, however the final design only included the latter. Within the first year of mintage, the twenty cent piece was immediately unpopular. The major complaint was it too similarly resembled the quarter dollar in both size and design, though the eagle on the Seated Liberty quarter faced the opposite direction. Parameters set for this coin are as follows: .900 silver/.100 copper composition, 22 mm diameter and plain edge. The unpopularity of this denomination saw a decrease in mintage after its first circulation strike in 1875, from over a million in total to just over 24,000 from both the Philadelphia and Carson City mints. 1877 & 1878 strikes were only in struck in proof.
