National banknotes were a form of United States paper currency distributed by National Banks authorized by the United States government. Starting in 1863 under the National Banking Act, banks with federal charters would deposit bonds into the U.S. Treasury which in turn would allow them to issue banknotes valued up to 90% of the bond's face value. Throughout their years of issue, National Bank Notes were primarily large sized. Each large sized National Bank Note was assigned two distinct numbers. The Treasury serial number indicated the total number of notes of that series and denomination issued by all banks. The bank serial number indicated the number of notes of that series and denomination issued only by that bank.
