The Seated Liberty quarter was a silver quarter minted from 1838 - 1891. Throughout its mintage, this series of quarter went through a total of five varieties as well as countless other sub varieties and errors due to inconsistencies with the dies. Examples such as large and small dates, oversized mintmarks, and double stamped letters all exist for this denomination and command higher prices. Originally designed by Christian Gobrecht, because of the countless changes to his original pattern, the Seated Liberty quarter never had a consistent standard with weight. By variety, the parameters set for this series are as follows: Variety 1 ‘No Motto Above Eagle’ (1838-1853): .900 silver, .100 copper composition, a total weight of 6.68 grams and features a reeded edge with 24.3 mm diameter. Minted in Philadelphia & New Orleans only. Variety 2 ‘Arrows at Date, Rays Around Eagle’ (1853): .900 silver, .100 copper composition, a total weight of 6.22 grams and features a reeded edge with 24.3 mm diameter. Minted in Philadelphia & New Orleans only. Variety 3 ‘Arrows at Date, No Rays’ (1854-1855): .900 silver, .100 copper composition, a total weight of 6.22 grams and features a reeded edge with 24.3 mm diameter. Minted in Philadelphia, New Orleans and San Francisco. Following Variety 3, Variety 1 was resumed with the weight standard of Variety 2 (1856-1865) Variety 4 ‘Motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” Above Eagle’ (1866-1873): Same parameters as aforementioned. The Carson City Mint Began minting the Seated Liberty quarters in 1870. Variety 5 ‘Arrows at Date’ (1873-1874): Because of the added arrows, the weight was changed from 6.22 grams to 6.25 grams. All other parameters remained the same. Minted in Philadelphia, San Francisco and Carson City. The last Seated Liberty quarters minted from 1875-1891 resumed Variety 4 with the weight standard of 6.25 grams from Variety 5. Mint marks inconsistent for each year.
