The $2.5 dollar Indian Head gold piece was a fractional gold coin minted from 1908-1915 and resumed again in 1925-1929. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, a Boston sculptor, he was a pupil under Augustus Saint-Gaudens, a famous sculptor who designed the $20 Gold (1907-1933) and the $10 Indian Head (1907-1933). This pattern was the only recessed design used in United States coinage history, however it was met with much skepticism. Many numismatists of the time disliked the thin planchet and recessed design, and claims were even made that the indented details would harbor dirt and germs, a claim that has now been proven false. Nevertheless, because of the populations distaste for the new design, many pieces went into heavy circulation, and examples of higher grade pieces are difficult to obtain. The outbreak of World War 1 caused gold prices to skyrocket, and from 1916 - 1924, this denomination ceased to be struck. Minting resumed in 1925, only to be halted again in 1929. Parameters set for this pattern are as follows: .900 gold, .100 copper composition, a net weight of .12094 oz, total weight of 4.18 grams and featured a reeded edge with an 18 mm diameter.
