The three-cent nickel was a three cent piece minted from 1865-1889. Its inception was brought about by the hoarding of its three cent counterpart, struck in silver. Designed by James B. Longacre, the three cent nickel was initially popular, and millions were struck in the first five years of its circulation, however beginning in 1866, Longacre designed a five cent piece, also struck in nickel, and effectively lowered the demand for lower denomination coinage. As the three cent nickels popularity decreased, so did the mintage, and by 1889 the last three cent pieces were struck, most of which were later melted to make more five cent nickels. Longacres design featured a profiled bust head of Liberty encircled by ‘UNITED STATES OF AMERICA’ while the date appeared beneath the bust on the obverse. The reverse featured the roman numeral three surrounded by a wreath. All pieces were struck at the Philadelphia mint and followed these parameters: .750 copper, .250 nickel composition, a total weight of 1.94 grams and a 17.9 mm diameter featuring a plain edge.
