Starting in 1854, James B. Longacre’s Liberty Head design was scrapped and his new design was implemented. The new obverse featured a profiled bust of Liberty depicted as an Indian Princess or Indian with a traditional feathered headdress. The reverse remained relatively the same, ‘1 DOLLAR’, and the date directly below. The wreath increased in size, inevitably increasing the diameter of the coin. Whereas the earlier Liberty Head design had a 13 mm diameter, the new Indian Head Princess featured a 15 mm diameter. In 1856, the size of Liberty’s head was enlarged, creating the Type 3 variety. All other parameters remained the same, .900 gold/ .100 copper composition, a net weight of .04837 oz. pure gold, total weight of 1.672 grams, and a reeded edge.
